Hubbard County Park, Flanders, South Fork, Long Island

Hubbard County Park is a piece of well preserved land north of route 24 in Flanders at the very beginning of the South Fork at the East End of Long Island. While everyone is rushing to get to the Hamptons, we parked in the small designated area and walked along 24 to get to the trail that goes through the mixed forest also known as Pine Barrens.
Somehow I knew to take the carriage- the path was a pretty wide dirt road. We hiked for less than a mile and got to an old estate house in the middle of the forest. It was still in private hands so it was not possible to see it up close. It was definitely beautiful and a little surreal to come upon this setting off of the developed rest of the Hamptons. We could hear roosters and see the water of the Peconic Bay in the distance.
