After we turned the corner we noticed a dog- a small dog- walking across the road. This is definitely a lost dog, the Armenian Prince announced as he pulled over.
I got off the car while baby A's eyes curiously followed me outside and to the green lawn the dog had reached.
I picked him up.
I had never before held such a small dog. He was trembling in my hands.
With the engine still on, we knocked at the nearest door. No, they did not know that dog. We rang a few more bells. We took the baby out of the car seat and went to as many houses as we could in the heat.
It was no one's dog.
We were going to be really late.
We got back in the car, dog in lap, and went around the block a few times. People gave us misleading directions to houses they thought were the dog's home. We tried anyway.
We were going to be really late.
Oh well, we'll take him with us, we decided.
We could not help but notice that he was tiny, adorable, a bit frightened yet with a warm disposition.
Toby with the leash we bough him from a 99c store in Brooklyn |
We learnt from a passerby that he is a chiwawa although AP already suspected that.
We learnt he was well taken care of by a chiwawa fan we met on the street.
We wondered how to find his home.
We held him mostly, he wasn't too keen on walking unfamiliar blocks.
And then we learnt about Fido Finder. We posted on it and we got a call within minutes.
A hyperventilating owner accurately described Toby. We had found his home! We learnt his name!
A few hours later we got home and they came to get him.
To my surprise, I felt a bit sad to be parting with him. I did not know that I had a side of my heart open for loving a dog. I just had never even considered it. But seeing how baby A played with Toby (she wanted to hold him the whole time) and holding him in my lap while he finally relaxed his head on my knees was an experience that brought so much joy and sweetness. It is not that I don't like dogs... it is just that I had never thought of having one in the City.
I will be missing him! But I am so glad he found his home.
Here are a few snaps with him.
Looking and looking... |
Immediate friends. |
Trying to nap, even under the circumstances. |
Oh My, do I have to give you up? I really want one just like you! |
A bit of playtime before saying bye bye. |
